American Hustle: Review

146583With its flashy style and A-list movie stars, American Hustle is a refreshing offering as we near the end of the year. It’s about a con man, Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) that is recruited and forced to work for an FBI agent, Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) The story takes place in the dark places around town. Dirty politicians, Shysters, criminals and the mob are all circling around the scenery. It may look like it’s about the disco scene but there is only one brief visit to that famous 70’s backdrop. The ladies in the film are fiercely sexy and stylish. Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams battle back and forth throughout the film with dazzling, memorable performances. The ensemble acting and the look of the characters in American Hustle are the best things about it.
The story and drama that unfolds is decent but each moment on screen with these actors, in these roles, is a pleasure to watch.
David O. Russell likes to make movies about people and experiencing their realness, flaws and all, for us to explore while also telling a story. He takes two of Hollywood’s favorite leading men and makes them look drab and bizarre. This works well and makes you completely believe in the characters up on the screen. With Bale in particular, he is almost unrecognizable, but is absolutely amazing. He turns in a stunning and wonderful performance that will most likely win him the Oscar.

The bottom line…it looks good, but plays even better. American Hustle is a must see.
