Jurassic World: Review

Jurassic World image

There are two things that stand out about the new installment into the Jurassic Park franchise. In Jurassic World, Chris Pratt and the Dinosaurs are excellent and it was just a case of the right actor at the right time for this role. The movie has been in and out of production for years, but finding an actor that is hot at the moment, and can balance action star qualities with humor was just what this film needed. That’s because the rest of the story is poorly constructed and the majority of the new actors don’t quite have the same charm of the original cast (The memorable and fabulous; Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neil, and Richard Attenborough) . Jurassic Park, based on the Michael Crichton novel, was released 22 years ago and after two not-so-great sequels,(the first two films were directed by Steven Spielberg who is also the series producer) we finally have a film that is up to par with the first.

Isla Nublar is where all the action takes place. This is the same magical spot where all the bad stuff went down in the first installment. Two young brothers Zach and Gray Mitchell pay a visit to the new and improved park, that has been renamed “Jurassic World”. It’s a Disney-esque dinosaur theme park located on the island. The boys are there to visit with their Aunt Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) who is the park’s operations manager. She is a bit too busy to hang with them as she is focusing on the parks newest asset, a genetically modified dinosaur called Indominus Rex. The plot is flooded with themes of how consumerism and money are turning everything pure on the island into an ad for some corporation. The dinosaurs are now being exploited and used for profit and possibly weaponry for the military. Chris Pratt plays a velociraptor trainer that is actually making progress on forming a bond and taming the dangerous and deadly dinosaurs. And so it’s no surprise there are people very interested in his talents that hope to utilize his work to create a raptor army of sorts.

The park is full of families vacationing and it looks similar to a Sea World or Epcot situation. The dinosaurs are kept in a way that the guests are never in any immediate danger. They have figured out a systematic way to take natures largest and deadliest creations and put them on display like zoo animals. When they stretch too far by creating a super species using a hybrid of a T-Rex and raptor things go horribly wrong. Of course, the two siblings are off on their own just around the time the dinos are on the loose. Most of what happens throughout is predictable with the good vs. evil themes that have been a part of all the films in this series. The way they pay homage to the original film and its “Dino-Stars” at the end of the movie makes up for a lot of the bland elements. You will be thrilled with the special effects as usual. I did miss Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm and wish they would have included him here for old times sakes.

Bottom line: The Dinosaurs and Chris Pratt are reason enough to go check out the new Jurassic World. The ending is awesome!
