Holiday Movies

whyhim

Why Him?

James Franco and Bryan Cranston star in a comedy with a Meet the Parents theme. Why Him? never reaches the heights of the Ben Stiller/De Niro classic. What it does have is a large dose of toilet bowl humor(literally). The story does take place over Christmas, so you could say it’s a holiday film. It’s the father vs. the fiance and although it’s funny at times overall it’s kind of stupid. I enjoyed this but certainly not for everyone.

la la land-movie-2016

La La Land

This is part musical and part Hollywood themed love story. Two of todays biggest stars fall in love and fall apart in Los Angeles. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both are fantastic and the movie is an interesting watch, but this is not my cup of tea. You will see this on many best of lists as a favorite and if you think you will like a musical love story about becoming a star in LA then this is for you.

Fences

Denzel Washington directs and stars in this adaptation of the pulitzer prize winning play. Viola Davis and Denzel are excellent and it’s a fantastic film to watch if you love great acting. It does feel like you are watching a play so be prepared for that kind of experience. There is a lot to like about Fences but I didn’t love it.

Passengers

Another planet, another time with two huge movie stars. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are a good pairing and have chemistry. That is the good news, the bad news is the story here is not good. It feels disconnected and fails to deliver. The stars were awesome and its a sci-fi adventure film at Christmas, and in that way I enjoyed it. Lower your expectations and go enjoy if this sounds like something you might like. Like most movies would have been better 30 minutes shorter.

The reason to see this film is the performance from Natalie Portman as the iconic First Lady. A behind the scenes look at a fascinating woman and her psychological state during the time following the assassination of her husband. This is a solid film experience.

Michael Fassbender stars in a video game movie. That is all you need to know. Great actor in a very confusing and historically difficult film genre. There are many calling this the best video game movie ever, and if you are into gaming and this particular game this could be a fun ride for you. I didn’t enjoy it.

Dev Patel and Rooney Mara are always fun to watch and Nicole Kidman is so good in this. It’s very slow to start and this is not a movie for everyone. If you are into artful films that deliver a positive and moving message over time then this is the ticket for you.
