Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 : Review

There are major challenges with any successful movie franchise attempting a sequel. The creators must balance between adding new elements and somehow repeating the best parts of the first film. It’s not an easy job and many sequels have failed over the years. Guardians of the Galaxy was a major blockbuster film with compelling and memorable characters.

The film raked in over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For this second installment they stick to the same expected themes and add in a few excellent new offerings. Chris Pratt has it all as an actor. Not many leading men can match his impressive trifecta of looks, humor and cool factor. One day he may be remembered as the most likable movie star of all time. He makes the entire Guardians universe fun to watch and does not disappoint in this second helping.

Director and writer James Gunn has a unique style that’s also a major factor in the success of these films. He has an appreciation for interesting classic rock music and easily blends the songs into the scenes in such an artful way. This is a skill director Cameron Crowe has cornered-the-market on and perfected over the years. Like Crowe, he also has a knack for developing scenes that tug at the heart strings. The difference with Gunn is the way he sneaks these  heartfelt moments in amidst all the action and humor. Gunn doesn’t let them hang out there too long either and this gives the characters and story a little heart to go with all the fun. It’s this blend of emotions and genres that really separates the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. In Vol. 2 we find out more about the past of Peter Quill (Star-Lord) and the guardians are re-directed to a completely new adventure after a job they were hired to do goes horribly wrong.

Baby Groot is an excellent addition and will become a fan favorite. The little guy is so cute and funny it may just catapult this new film past the original. Kurt Russell is a nice addition to the film and his character adds the perfect element needed to make the movie new and engaging. The concept of his character is a little hard to wrap your head around, but in the end it all works out just fine. With the action scenes and special effects, it’s almost a given these days it’s going to be good, but Gunn really delivers and his effects are both exciting and cool. The central themes of friendship and loyalty that Guardians delivers is the winning formula that makes these movies so watchable and enjoyable.

The Bottom Line: Pratt, Gunn, Baby Groot, the music, and heart of the story makes for a worthwhile second adventure.
